Round Rock – DRUG RECOGNITION EXPERT INSTRUCTOR COURSE

50-hour course to certify officers as Drug Recognition Expert Instructors. The course consists of three phases.
- DRE Instructor School
- Instructor Presentations at DRE School
- DRE Instructor Field Certification
Minimum qualifications:
At least 5 years as a DRE prior to the course start date, or
At least 2 years as a DRE prior to the course start date with a minimum of 30 enforcement evaluations since initial certification.
Possess a TCOLE Basic Instructor Certificate.
Documented classroom or field training experience.
Preferred qualifications:
The above, plus an SFST Instructor Certificate with documented SFST training history.
Selection process:
Acceptance to DRE Instructor School is a competitive process. You may very well be qualified to become a DRE Instructor, but if in the opinion of the State DRE Committee, there are candidates more qualified than you than there are seats in the class, you may not be accepted.
After the deadline, all applications will be reviewed individually by members of the State DRE Committee. Acceptable candidates will be ranked, and the top 12 will be selected for the class. Others will be placed on the stand-by list. If there are not 12 acceptable candidates, only the number of candidates deemed acceptable, will attend.
Roadmap to Certification:
Attend the 50 hour Drug Recognition Expert Instructor Development Course.
-Must pass the end of course exam with a minimum of 80% and complete the Small Matrix
with no errors. There is no remedial exam.
-Achieve an acceptable rating by all evaluating instructors during your teaching sessions.
-Candidates not passing the exams or failing to achieve an acceptable rating will not be certified as a DRE Instructor.
Attend a DRE School as an instructor candidate. Assignments will be made by the Course Manager based upon the geographical location of the candidate and in the best interest of the program.
-As assigned by the Course manager, attend the full week 1 or week 2 sessions of a DRE School
and teach a minimum of 5 sessions
-Participate in hands on coaching and practice sessions
-Participate in one alcohol workshop
-Achieve an acceptable rating by all evaluating instructors during your teaching and hands on coaching and practice sessions.
Attend Field Certification Training.
-Under the supervision of a DRE Instructor, witness, evaluate, critique, and if necessary, remediate a minimum of four DRE candidates performing a drug influence evaluation.
-Achieve an acceptable rating by all evaluating instructors during your evaluations.
