DESCRIPTION:The Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) course was developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with input from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Technical Advisory Panel (TAP)\, and the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police. ARIDE was created to address the gap in training between the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) and the Drug Evaluation and Classification (DEC/DRE) Program. \nARIDE bridges the gap between the SFST and DEC/DRE programs\, providing officers with general knowledge related to drug impairment and promoting the use of Drug Recognition Experts (DREs).  This course will train law enforcement officers\, to observe\, identify\, and articulate the signs of impairment related to drugs\, alcohol\, or a combination of both\, to reduce the number of impaired driving incidents as well as crashes which result in serious injuries and fatalities. \nPlease note: \nParticipants are required to pass a proficiency exam at the beginning of the course. DESCRIPTION:The Texas Drug Recognition Expert Program\n\nPresents \nThe Medical Foundations of \nVisual Systems Testing\n \nPresenter:  Dr. Karl Citek\, O.D.\n  \nMany courts will not qualify a DRE as an expert unless he or she has received training from a medical professional. This course will provide the medical and scientific foundations of the various components of the DRE protocol\, including the eye tests\, vital signs and psychophysical and divided attention tasks. Common medical conditions\, rule-outs and alternative explanations for observed signs will be discussed. The course will include numerous videos\, classroom demonstrations and an alcohol workshop. \nThis program is intended for officers who are Certified Drug Recognition Experts (DREs)\, SFST Instructors\, and experienced DWI officers. \nTopics Include: \n\nAnatomy and physiology of the eye and the central nervous system\nDevelopment and control of eye responses\nUse and abuse of drugs\nEffects of drugs on the body\, the eyes and perception\nEffects of medical and environmental conditions\nTesting of eye signs\nLegal aspects of testing at the traffic stop and the DRE evaluation\nTrial preparation\n\n\n  \nEligible for 24 hours TCOLE credit.
